Delighted with his beautiful new wheat crop, Charles is in a position to buy new dresses for his daughters, a warm coat for Caroline, and maybe even some new boots for himself–not to mention an ideal team of horses that the family’s newfound financial position can now afford. It all sounds like a dream come true, but the Ingalls receive a shocking wakeup call when a harsh hailstorm destroys the entire crop. Determined to make it through this difficult time, Charles heads off to find some work, and along the way he encounters two fellow husbands and fathers in the same situation as he. While Caroline, the girls, and the other women of Walnut Grove do some important work of their own in Walnut Grove, Charles and his new friends accept jobs that offer good pay and dangerous consequences.

A long-running drama based upon the “Little House” series of books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, “Little House on the Prairie” follows the lives of the simple, farming Ingalls family: Charles, Caroline, Mary, Laura, Carrie and then Grace and the later adopted Albert, James and Cassandra, who settle into a quaint little house on the banks of Plum Creek near the small town of Walnut Grove during the late 1800s. Often narrated by Laura, the series follows her simple farm upbringing from her childhood until her adulthood with Almanzo Wilder with whom she starts a family of her own. While the series is based upon the Little House books (and thus the real life of author Laura Ingalls Wilder), it is a very loose adaptation, with mostly only key events and elements of fact surviving the transition from book to TV series, the most important being Mary’s eventual blindness, and Laura’s future. Several other fictitious (some factual) characters make up the friendly community of Walnut Grove, including teacher Miss Beadle (succeeded by two other teachers, then Laura, then Etta Plum), Dr. Hiram Baker, Rev. Robert Alden, Mr. Hanson (of the Hanson lumber mill), and the well-to-do Olesons, owners of the local mercantile, and also the primary rivals of the Ingalls family (except the Oleson patriarch). Family friends include the Edwards family, the Garvey family and the Carters, who, in the final season, move into the Ingalls’ little house.

But Caroline forgets her own wise words, loses her temper with Nellie’s haughty mother, store owner Harriet Oleson, and impulsively buys dress fabric she can barely afford. Later, Laura struggles to write an essay for the Visitors’ Day program and Caroline must decide what to do with the expensive fabric. When Visitors’ Day arrives, their love for each other helps both mother and daughter solve their problems.

Sheepherders move into the valley, they and the cattle ranchers feud over rights to the grazing land, and Rob is accused of poisoning a water hole during the ordeal.

My Friend Flicka was 20th Century-Fox’s very first venture into television production, so it launched what was to become a very long and profitable enterprise for this major studio. Twentieth Century-Fox television Productions, Inc. (T.C.F.) began filming the series in the summer of 1955. All of the series’ episodes were filmed during 1955 and 1956. The interior scenes were all filmed, according to Johnny Washbrook himself, at the Fox Western lot—the 20th Century-Fox studio at Western Avenue and Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. “That lot had been inactive for many years until we started filming there” he says. “The exterior shots were filmed at the Fox Ranch in Malibu Canyon and a few times at Iverson Ranch in Chatsworth in the San Fernando Valley. Occasionally, stock footage from the original My Friend Flicka movie was inter-cut to add some splendor and panoramic scenic shots from their location shooting.”
The pilot and first episode of the television series was titled “The Phantom Herd,” and it debuted the evening of February 10th, 1956 on CBS-TV. The episodes were filmed in color, but CBS originally broadcast them all in black and white. This was due to both the lack of color technology and the lack of color television sets in the United States at that time. The following season, it was picked up by NBC, and they began showing it in “living color.” Which brings us to mention the series’ place as a major milestone in television history, for My Friend Flicka was the very first regularly-scheduled color television show!

The one, the only, the original. I find it hard to believe that anyone hasn’t heard of, let alone seen, this legendary show featuring Buffalo Bob Smith operating a marionette that would entertain all the children. I can’t even imagine the anticipation children had when they screamed “It’s Howdy Doody time!” This particular show had a fun story involving Howdy in “marble” debt and making a deal with Mr. Bluster to do an act as compensation.

“The HOWDY DOODY Show” was the first network kids show to run 5 days a week, the first network show of the day (in the beginning it was preceded by the daily test pattern), the first television show ever broadcast in color, and the the first show ever to air more than 1,000 continuous episodes. In December of 1947, when Buffalo Bob Smith (born Robert Schmidt on 11/27/17) created and aired HOWDY DOODY, there were only 20,000 American homes that even had television sets. NBC only had six stations in the beginning, and HOWDY DOODY is credited as a major factor in the growth and popularity of that network. From the original show’s inception on December 27, 1947 until it’s final airing on NBC on December 30, 1960, HOWDY DOODY visited our homes 2,543 times.
