Season 1 Ep.02: Be It Ever So Mortgaged

Darrin is buying a new house and wants Samantha to check it out. Samantha and Endora go to 1164 Morning Glory Circle and have a lot of fun rearranging the place with magic. Of course, they also have new neighbors, nosy Gladys Kravitz and her do-nothing husband Abner Kravitz. Gladys knows that she sees something funny going on at the Stephens’ new house, but Abner doesn’t believe her.

The young executive of an advertisement agency, Darrin Stephens marries a beautiful woman, Samantha Stephens. On their honeymoon, Sam discloses a secret to him: she is a witch with magic powers. He makes her promise him that she will live like a mortal, without using witchcraft and spells in their lives, but sometimes she uses her magic to help Darrin and herself. Sam’s mother, Endora does not accept her mortal son-in-law, hates him and can hardly say his name correctly. In the suburb of Morning Glory Circle, where they live, their curious next-door neighbor Gladys Kravitz suspect Samantha, but can never prove the weird situations she sees to her husband Abner Kravitz. Darrin works in the McMahon and Tate ad agency with Larry Tate, who is married to Louise Tate. Samantha frequently receives her witch aunts in her house, specially her sweet old Aunt Clara.

Episode 4: Is there a Doctor in the Roundhouse

No one can attend Kate’s Shady Rest Jamboree after Norman Curtis makes the Cannonball inoperative.

One of the most underrated sitcoms in television history, “Petticoat Junction” is a fine example of character-driven comedy. Though it is overshadowed by the other rural comedies, “Andy Griffith,” “The Beverly Hillbillies,” and “Green Acres,” “Petticoat Junction” had a warmth that continued throughout its 7 year run.
Petticoat Junction centered around a small farming community of Hooterville provided the setting for this highly successful rural situation comedy. Kate Bradley was the widowed owner of the only transient housing in town, the Shady Rest Hotel. Helping her run the hotel were her three beautiful daughters, Billie Jo, Bobbie Jo, and Betty Jo. Also assisting was the girls’ lazy Uncle Joe, who had assumed the title of manager.
The only way to reach the place was by the Hooterville Cannonball, an old train which made regular stops along the way, though never adhered to a strict schedule so as to better assist those living along the rail line.
The episodes before Bea Benaderet’s untimely death are perhaps the best, but “Petticoat Junction” remains one of television’s undiscovered gems.
This television classic (CBS-TV, 1963-1970) was one of the most successful and beloved situation comedies of the 1960s. Created by Paul Henning, the same mastermind behind “The Beverly Hillbillies” (also available in TVclassicshows.com), “Petticoat Junction” ranked as the fourth-highest rated series during its debut season.
