Season 7 Ep.05: The Three Queens
Jack King, the new local car dealer, is holding a contest as advertising to find “Jack King’s Queen”, the prettiest girl in the valley. As incentive, the grand prize is a trip to Los Angeles. Steve encourages Orrin to earn brownie points with Bobbie Jo by entering her in the contest. Betty Jo is angry that Steve didn’t think of her for the contest. And originally unknown to Steve and Orrin, Uncle Jo enters Billie Jo in the contest, she who is a little embarrassed by being entered by her uncle instead of a beau but who is nonetheless grateful. Steve sees that having all three sisters entered in the contest will lead to nothing but trouble, especially as a Bradley is bound to win. Although it doesn’t start out that way, he ends up being right, with each girl and her nominator not speaking to the enemy camps. Sam complicates matters by submitting his own entry. On the day of the contest, Janet thinks she might have the answer to all their problems.
One of the most underrated sitcoms in television history, “Petticoat Junction” is a fine example of character-driven comedy. Though it is overshadowed by the other rural comedies, “Andy Griffith,” “The Beverly Hillbillies,” and “Green Acres,” “Petticoat Junction” had a warmth that continued throughout its 7 year run.
Petticoat Junction centered around a small farming community of Hooterville provided the setting for this highly successful rural situation comedy. Kate Bradley was the widowed owner of the only transient housing in town, the Shady Rest Hotel. Helping her run the hotel were her three beautiful daughters, Billie Jo, Bobbie Jo, and Betty Jo. Also assisting was the girls’ lazy Uncle Joe, who had assumed the title of manager.
The only way to reach the place was by the Hooterville Cannonball, an old train which made regular stops along the way, though never adhered to a strict schedule so as to better assist those living along the rail line.
The episodes before Bea Benaderet’s untimely death are perhaps the best, but “Petticoat Junction” remains one of television’s undiscovered gems.
This television classic (CBS-TV, 1963-1970) was one of the most successful and beloved situation comedies of the 1960s. Created by Paul Henning, the same mastermind behind “The Beverly Hillbillies” (also available in TVclassicshows.com), “Petticoat Junction” ranked as the fourth-highest rated series during its debut season.
