Ranger Porter Ricks is responsible for the animal and human life in Coral Key Park, Florida. Stories center on his 15-year-old son Sandy and 10-year-old Bud and, especially, on their pet dolphin Flipper (played by Suzy).
Season 1 Ep. 7: Not Necessarily Gospel
Bud enjoys visiting Mr. Hap Gorman because he tells really good stories. Meanwhile, Porter has received news that there may be poachers within the boundaries of Coral Key Nature Preserve trapping lobsters. After diving to investigate, sure enough, traps have been set. He goes out in the middle of the night hoping to catch and arrest them, but instead, the poachers ram his boat! After going to every boat repair shop around, no one claims they repaired the boat – not even Mr. Hap Gorman. The trouble is, Hap is lying. Hap was telling stories to hide the fact that he did repair the boat. Feeling guilty, Hap doesn’t go with Bud on a boat ride to find the poachers. The poachers take Bud’s boat and leave him stranded on a buoy. Against his will, Flipper pulls Mr. Gorman’s boat to where Bud is hanging on to the buoy, and then explains to Mr. Ricks that he knows the poachers and fixed their boat. Mr. Gorman then helps him to find the poachers and arrest them.
Flipper was a show about a game ranger named Porter Ricks, and his two sons, Sandy and Bud. The show centers around a precocious pet dolphin, named Flipper, and all their adventures. The show ran for three seasons, and they stopped making new episodes in 1967.
The series was a spin off of the feature film “Flipper” in 1963. The film had a sequel, “Flipper’s New Adventure” in 1964. A new Flipper TV series appeared for a short time in the 1990s. A feature film also entitled “Flipper” was released in 1996, starring Paul Hogan as Porter Ricks, and Elijah Wood as his nephew, Sandy, and of course, Flipper. The original Flipper was named Mitzi and she lived from 1958 to 1972. The dolphin had died of a heart attack. Flipper had a stunt double (Mr. Gipper) to do all of the tail walking.
