Bewitched is a fantasy sitcom chronicling what happens when a witch and a mortal fall in love and get married in 1960s and ’70s suburban America. At the very center of the show is Elizabeth Montgomery’s portrayal of a good-hearted witch named Samantha. A strong, independent woman with the world at her finger tips (or at the twitch of her nose), she gives up her witchly life to do things the “mortal way”. Her mortal husband Darrin Stephens (played by Dick York, and later Dick Sargent) is a talented advertising executive with McMann & Tate. He obsesses with leading a “normal life” where one works hard to earn a good living for one’s family. He constantly struggles against disapproving witches and warlocks, like Samantha’s powerful mother, Endora.

Teenager Liza Randall interviews Darrin about his career in advertising for a school newspaper. After Darrin takes Liza to the agency on Saturday, Liza’s jealous boy friend, Marvin “Monster” Grogan, visits Samantha. Monster, a football star, wants to batter Darrin. Samantha, stuffing Monster with food, explains the innocence of Darrin and Liza’s relationship although she knows Liza is more than interested in Darrin. At the office, Liza pours drinks. Liza and Darrin are doused when Darrin tries to take the drink away from her. Darrin escapes an awkward situation when boss Larry Tate arrives with two prospective clients. Meanwhile, Monster takes a romantic interest in Samantha. Darrin and Liza arrive, reeking of liquor. Darrin accuses Samantha of playing up to Monster. Samantha taunts him about Liza. However, when Monster winds up to clout Darrin, he bruises his hand on the invisible shield Samantha has created. When Liza slaps Darrin, however, Samantha lets him get the full force of the blow. Later Samantha removes her own protective shield when Darrin tries to make up.
The young executive of an advertisement agency, Darrin Stephens marries a beautiful woman, Samantha Stephens. On their honeymoon, Sam discloses a secret to him: she is a witch with magic powers. He makes her promise him that she will live like a mortal, without using witchcraft and spells in their lives, but sometimes she uses her magic to help Darrin and herself. Sam’s mother, Endora does not accept her mortal son-in-law, hates him and can hardly say his name correctly. In the suburb of Morning Glory Circle, where they live, their curious next-door neighbor Gladys Kravitz suspect Samantha, but can never prove the weird situations she sees to her husband Abner Kravitz. Darrin works in the McMahon and Tate ad agency with Larry Tate, who is married to Louise Tate. Samantha frequently receives her witch aunts in her house, specially her sweet old Aunt Clara.
